On Friday afternoon, Burkina Faso President Lt Col Paul-Henri Damiba had of taste of his own medicine with Capt Ibrahim Traore leading a successful coup against the government he had formed.

Capt Ibrahim dissolved the transitional government which had been set up by President Damiba following a military coup of a civilian President that happened barely eight months ago in January 2022. Capt Ibrahim also suspended the Constitution besides announcing the discontinuation of the transitional charter.

Although it is suspected that an "internal crisis" within the army precipitated the September 30th coup, Burkina Faso's new military leader cited the emergency the country faced in every sector, "from security to defense, to health, to social action, to infrastructure" as reasons for carrying out the coup.

It seems the very justification now-former President of Burkina Faso Paul-Henri Damiba for the coup he led in January 2022 have come back to haunt him. Both leaders read from the same script to justify the coup.

Following the coup, and heated fights near the Presidential Palace, Paul-Henri Damiba agreed to resign; with the coup-leader taking over the leadership of the country.
